Understanding that a whole number is any number that is not a fraction, is an important number sense skill. Whole numbers represent all of something such as 1 whole candy bar or 3 whole pizzas.
Let's look at another example of whole numbers. In this example, the 10 squares represents 10 chairs in a classroom.

If 5 people enter the room and sit in a chair, then half of the chairs are filled. This is 5 of 10 or half of the number 10 and not the whole number.
