Evaporation The process of water turning from a liquid into vapor or gas, often due to heat. The sun's heat causes the evaporation of water from lakes and oceans.
Condensation The process of water vapor turning into liquid water, forming clouds or dew. Clouds are formed through the condensation of water vapor in the atmosphere.
Precipitation Any form of water, liquid or solid, that falls from the sky, including rain, snow, sleet, and hail. We experienced heavy precipitation in the form of snow during the winter.
Transpiration The release of water vapor from plants into the atmosphere through small openings in their leaves. Forests play a vital role in transpiration, releasing large amounts of water vapor.
Runoff The flow of water over the surface of the Earth, often into rivers, streams, or oceans. After heavy rain, the runoff from the hills can cause flooding in the valleys.
Aquifer An underground layer of water-bearing rock or sediment that stores and supplies groundwater. Many communities rely on aquifers for their source of drinking water.
Groundwater Water that is stored beneath the Earth's surface in soil or rock formations. Wells tap into groundwater as a source of freshwater for homes and farms.
Desalination The process of removing salt and other impurities from seawater to make it suitable for drinking and irrigation. Desalination plants provide freshwater in regions with limited freshwater sources.
Hydrological Cycle Another term for the water cycle, which describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the Earth's surface. The hydrological cycle is essential for maintaining the planet's water supply.
Reservoir A natural or artificial lake or pond where water is stored for various purposes, including water supply and recreation. The reservoir is used to store water for the city's drinking water supply.
Hydroelectric Power Electricity generated from the energy of flowing or falling water, often through the use of dams. Hydroelectric power plants harness the energy of rivers to generate electricity.
