Words Meaning Example
Lever A rigid bar that pivots around a fixed point called a fulcrum to lift or move objects. A seesaw is a simple machine that uses a lever to balance riders.
Pulley A wheel with a groove for a rope or cable to run over, often used to lift heavy objects. A flag on a flagpole is raised using a pulley system.
Wheel and Axle A rotating wheel (the wheel) attached to a rod (the axle) to make it easier to move objects. A bicycle uses a wheel and axle to move forward when pedaled.
Inclined Plane A flat surface that is slanted, making it easier to raise or lower objects over a distance. A ramp is an example of an inclined plane used for loading and unloading trucks.
Wedge A triangular-shaped tool with a sharp edge used for splitting or cutting objects. A knife is a common example of a wedge.
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a central cylinder, often used to hold things together. A screw secures two pieces of wood in place.
Compound Machine A machine that combines two or more simple machines to perform work. A bicycle is a compound machine that combines a wheel and axle with gears and a chain.
Fulcrum The fixed point around which a lever pivots or rotates. The fulcrum of a seesaw is located in the center.
Effort The force applied to a simple machine to perform work. To lift a heavy box, you need to apply a strong effort.
Load The object being lifted or moved by a simple machine. The load on a pulley system is the weight you're trying to lift.
Mechanical Advantage The measure of how much a simple machine multiplies or increases the force applied to it. A longer lever provides greater mechanical advantage for lifting.
Work In physics, work is done when a force is applied to an object to move it over a distance. Lifting a suitcase into an overhead compartment requires work.
Ramp An inclined plane used for easier movement of objects, often with a gradual slope. Wheelchair ramps provide accessibility for people with mobility challenges.
Gear A toothed wheel that meshes with other gears to transmit motion or change speed or direction. A bicycle's gears allow the rider to change speed while pedaling.
Chain A series of connected links or rings that transmit motion or power, often used with gears. A bicycle's chain connects the pedals to the rear wheel.
Tension The force exerted by a stretched object, such as a tightrope or cable. The tension in the rope supports the weight of the hanging sign.
Gear Ratio The ratio of the number of teeth on two meshing gears, determining speed and torque. A lower gear ratio provides more torque but lower speed, suitable for climbing hills on a bicycle.
Efficiency The measure of how well a machine converts input work into useful output work. An efficient machine minimizes energy loss as heat or friction.
Hydraulic System A system that uses fluids under pressure to transmit force and perform work. Car brakes use a hydraulic system to transmit force and stop the vehicle.
Lever Arm The part of a lever from the fulcrum to the point where force is applied. The longer the lever arm, the more mechanical advantage it provides.
