Months of the Year introduces younger children to the concept of time and how time passes in groups called months. Time can be a hard concept to grasp, but starting with days of the week and months of the year begins to form a structure and foundation for them in terms of how time passes. Once kids master naming the months in order, which can be accomplished by teaching them a simple song, they move on to associating them in the span of time. The game is based around the order of the months in a year and the seasons associated with them.
Learning to match months of the year to the seasons in which they take place is a higher-level skill. Looking at pictures of different seasons and how the environment typically changes will allow kids to first grasp the concepts of four seasons in a year before assigning months for each. Teaching them characteristics for each season, such as leaves changing color in the fall and snow in winter, will help them to understand what happens in which month as well.
Learning to see and recognize the name of the months is also an important skill. Some of the names of months are more difficult to pronounce, so games that read them aloud with accompanying graphics and seasonal characteristics really help to build the full picture for your child. Without even trying, your student will quickly learn to recognize the names of the months whether they’re officially reading them or not, and attribute them to their appropriate seasonal representation. It’s a great way to master skills without formal, structured lessons.
