Metric Units of Length

Metric Units of Length
The metric system of measurement is a system that most countries in the world use and agree on. In science, only metric units are used.
The metric unit of length is the meter, and many subsets of the meter like millimeter, centimeter and kilometer are used for scale.
Metric Unit Conversion
Here, you can see the conversion table for all metric units.
Metric Unit Conversion | |
1 centimeter = | 10 millimeters |
1 decimeter = | 10 centimeters |
1 meter = | 100 centimeters |
1 kilometer = | 1000 meters |
Notice that all you have to do with metric units is multiply and divide by multiples of 10 to get different units. If you know the order to units this is easy to do.
There are many more units, but for our purposes, the order goes (from smallest to highest):
→ Millimeters (mm)
→ Centimeters (cm)
→ Meters (m)
→ Kilometers (km)
1 mm x 10 = 1 cm
1 cm x 100 = 1 m
1 m x 1000 = 1 km
Examples:
1. To find out the length of the door, you can use smaller or larger scales of metric units like millimeters or centimeters. You have to use the unit that is most appropriate based on the size of the object.
2. If you are talking about a football field or a backyard and want to measure it in metric units, meters would be appropriate.
