Division Games for Third Grade
Number sense provides the basis for mathematical learning in lower grades, but the third graders are given more advanced challenges including word problems, chances to compare and contrast options, and place value identification. The learning standard involves a solid understanding of the associative, commutative, and distributive properties of numbers, and family relationships between numbers and operations such as multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.
The introduction of 2D and 3D objects helps students solve geometric puzzles, often using small objects such as pieces of candy or pennies. A fair bit of time is spent on graphing numbers, comparing and contrasting objects with different physical properties, and understanding how the language of mathematics is used to describe objects. This also includes counting the number of edges, faces, and vertices, determining angles of triangles and trapezoids, and plotting on a timeline and in two dimensions. Many of these skills are geared to create a learning environment, and division games for 3rd grade can go a long way in guiding children's understanding of these critical foundations.
Word problems are a large part of what children will be working on in division games for third grade, with teachers introducing spatial understanding and classification through simple problems such as: if you eat 3 pieces of pizza 2 times, how many pieces of pizza did you eat? Developing this fundamental knowledge of number manipulation helps students to eventually learn to read maps and acquire spatial sense, using tools such as explanation, identification, reorganization, and classification of numbers.
Numeric theory supports learning how to distinguish sets and patterns in a subset of data points, allowing students to apply the correct operator to ferret out answers of ever more involved problems. TurtleDiary.com supports both working out problems long-hand as well as using a proper calculator with 3rd grade division games such as Catch the Factors and Divide and Win-tools guaranteed to make learning about division fun for children and adults alike.
